How to add captions in Premiere Pro
Premiere can generate captions or import a caption file. The reliable workflow is still: review the transcript, check the track, then export the right format.

TL;DR: generate or import an SRT, put it on a caption track, review timing and line breaks, then export a captioned master or keep the SRT for the platform.
1. Start from the final cut
Caption after picture lock. If you trim or reorder after captioning, re-check the cues. A constant offset is easy to fix; a reordered section is not.
2. Import or generate
- Import an existing SRT from AutoCaptions onto a caption track.
- Or generate a transcript in Premiere, then correct names and jargon.
- Do not put captions on a regular graphics layer if the platform needs a caption track.
3. Review and export
| Goal | Export |
|---|---|
| Toggleable captions | SRT/VTT + clean master |
| Social/embed always-on | Burned-in captioned master |
| Both | Clean master + SRT + captioned master |
